Description

This textbook is Unit One of the third volume of the solfège series "Pursuing a Jaques-Dalcroze Education" by Jack Stevenson.  The first chapter begins with the rhythm subject of complex meter, where beats are studied as additive structures that expand and contract by one division within the same measure.  The text provides a comprehensive discussion of meter patterns as variations of "aksaks," which are bichronal structures (two types of time) where the beats within a measure cannot divide evenly. Consequently, the aksaks produce time signatures with multiple beat patterns, such as 3+2+2+2.  Extensive audio recordings and music scores composed by the author provide illustrations of the various aksak types.

The subsequent chapters focus on the pentachord within all diatonic scales.  It shows how pentachords guide modulations to non-related keys, and how pentachords reveal the basic triad, and how they invert.  Another chapter introduces sung figured bass to support singing major, minor, augment, and diminished triads.

The book also provides melodies, rhythms in two and three parts, duets, trios, and canons in a wide variety of keys and rhythmic styles.  The text is wholly annotated and contains a linked glossary, index, and music dictionary.
